The main goal of the conference, which will bring together more than 200 companies, non-governmental organizations and Governments from all over the world,  is to effectively engage the business community in the implementation of the three objectives of the CBD (conservation of biological diversity, sustainable use of natural resources and benefits sharing) by stressing the link between biodiversity and core business and by highlighting best practices, including life-cycle approaches and incentive mechanisms. By emphasizing existing efforts under way, the event will explore ways to scale up business engagement on biodiversity issues and develop recommendations on collaborative actions that can be undertaken.

LIFE Certification, launched in Brazil in 2009 and with a plan regarding its international actuation, will serve as example to the conference discussions, taking into account that the new certification proposes to be a new mechanism for conservation of biodiversity (and consequently to support the CBD objectives), for recognition of companies which carry out actions in favor of natural patrimony, and for incentive to the market to adopt actions that recognize the dependence of business on nature e reduce their impact over the environment.

The Jakarta conference recommendations will be submitted to the intergovernmental discussions that will happen in the 10th Conference of the Parties (COP-10) of Convention on Biological Diversity, which will take place in Nagoya, Japan, in October 2010. The conference of parties is an event held each two years and gather governmental representatives of the 192 signatory countries of the Convention to discuss the effective implementation of their objectives.
