23.03.2010 | 00h00Lights out: 8:30 p.m. March 27, a call to stand up in support of climate change
Instituto LIFE ─ responsible for managing LIFE Certificate of Compliance, a tool to foster environment management initiatives within companies ─ has officially joined the Earth Hour 2010. The movement is a symbolic action against climate change that has been promoted by WWF worldwide since 2007. This is the second year of the event in Brazil. In Curitiba, where Instituto LIFE is based, the community mobilization aspects of the event will be coordinated by O Boticario Foundation for Nature Protection.
“Instituto LIFE promotes biodiversity and sustainable development, aiming to mitigate businesses’ negative impact, while valuing the conservation of natural areas. These areas and their environmentally-safe processes are responsible for producing clean water, raw material, new scientific discoveries, inspiring new technologies and mitigating climate change. Earth Hour is, therefore, in complete alignment with LIFE Certificate’s principles”, points out Maria Alice Alexandre, Instituto LIFE’s Executive Secretary.
At 8:30 p.m. (Brasilia official time), on Saturday, March 27, thousands of light points across Brazil, including tourist attractions and monuments will be switched off for an hour, to show our concern with climate change/ global warming.
Among Instituto LIFE-sponsored initiatives to contribute to Earth Hour are the dissemination of and engagement to the cause of its vendors, collaborators and associates. LIFE will act as a multiplier, by mobilizing the largest number of people with the use of its work tools.
Organized by WWF, Earth Hour is a global initiative to rally people around natural environment sustainability. In its first edition in 2007, 2 million homes and businesses in Australia turned their lights off for one hour. In 2008, over 50 million people all over the world joined in the sustainability movement. In 2009, when WWF-Brazil promoted Earth Hour in the country for the first time, almost 1 billion people all over the world turned their lights off.
